While consumers get comfortable shopping overseas, companies are setting themselves up to deal with cross-border complexity

In just a few short years, the 2020s have witnessed remarkable changes to global spending patterns. Heralded as a golden age for ecommerce (a fitting moniker for a decade that began with a series of global lockdowns), these shifts are increasingly shaped by international demand. 

Avalara’s State of Global Cross-border Ecommerce report finds that the majority of online retailers in 2023 are taking international orders. However, meeting consumer expectations for convenience and speed in a cross-border context poses a formidable challenge. From tax compliance concerns to shifting customer expectations, businesses that trade beyond their borders have their work cut out.
