Strategy is a human challenge
There is a common assumption that if people have been told the strategy, they understand it. If they understand it, they will support it. If they support it, they will naturally change the way they work. However, experience suggests otherwise.
At a time when many organisations are managing AI adoption, digital transformation and evolving customer expectations simultaneously, employees are also experiencing a degree of change fatigue. It becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between one transformation programme and the next, particularly when every initiative arrives accompanied by another presentation and another set of corporate messages.
Information alone does not overcome that challenge. Successful communication is about creating clarity, confidence and commitment. It should help people understand not only what the organisation is trying to achieve, but why those choices have been made and how each individual can contribute to delivering them.
Start before the launch
One of the most common mistakes organisations make is treating the strategy launch as the beginning of the communication programme. In reality, it should sit somewhere in the middle.
The organisations that execute strategy well begin building awareness before the formal launch. They explain why change is needed, create curiosity about the future direction of the business and give people time to absorb the context before they are presented with the finished strategy. By the time the launch arrives, employees are ready to engage with the discussion rather than hearing about the strategy for the first time.
The launch itself should do far more than present a new set of objectives and targets. It is an opportunity to explain the organisation’s ambition, the challenges it is responding to and the choices it has made. Above all, it should answer the question that matters most to employees: what does this mean for me, my team and the work I do every day?
The real test begins once the launch event is over. This is the stage where many organisations lose momentum as leadership attention shifts elsewhere and communication gradually becomes less frequent. Yet embedding a strategy requires sustained effort. Leaders need to reinforce priorities consistently, share evidence of progress, celebrate successes, acknowledge setbacks and create opportunities for dialogue.
The Three Es of strategic communication
One way of thinking about effective strategy communication is through three principles: Educate, Emotion and Engage.
The first is Educate. People need more than headlines or high-level ambitions. They need clear explanations that remove complexity and connect the strategy to their day-to-day responsibilities. Different audiences require different levels of detail, different examples and different channels, whether they are frontline employees, senior managers, customers or strategic partners. Effective communication is always designed with the audience in mind rather than assuming that one message will resonate equally with everyone.
The second is Emotion. Business leaders sometimes underestimate the role emotion plays in organisational change, believing that evidence and logic alone will persuade people. In reality, people make sense of change through stories rather than spreadsheets. They are far more likely to support a strategy when they understand the problem it is solving, hear examples of the people it will benefit and recognise their own experiences in the narrative. Facts explain change, but stories give people a reason to care about it.
Finally, organisations need to Engage. Communication cannot remain a one-way broadcast from leadership. Employees, customers, partners and stakeholders all need opportunities to ask questions, challenge assumptions and contribute ideas. Genuine engagement creates ownership, and ownership is what turns strategic intent into action. When people feel they have a voice in the journey, they become advocates rather than passive recipients of information.
Measure understanding, not activity
Many organisations have become adept at measuring communication outputs. They know how many employees attended an event, opened an email or watched a leadership video, but those metrics reveal very little about whether people actually understand the strategy or are making different decisions because of it.
The more meaningful questions are harder to answer. Can employees explain the strategic priorities in their own words? Do managers consistently make decisions that reflect those priorities? Are customers beginning to see evidence of the promised changes? These are the indicators that communication is influencing behaviour rather than simply generating awareness.
